BOSTON Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo may be entering his second season in the NHL, but hes practically a grizzled veteran on a young 2017-18 roster after playing in all 82 games last season.Boston's defense corps will feature two rookies to start the season, and at least two rookies will be in the lineup up front. That means Carlo might be asked to use his NHL experience to be a guiding light to some inexperienced players that will have an immense impact on the succe s or failure of the Bruins this season.Carlo, who roomed with forward Frank Vatrano most of last season, might even be asked to help his neophyte teammates off the ice by taking one into his home.SN PREDICTIONS:||||Im definitely open.If anybody wants to come in thats a young guy, I wouldnt mind having that,"Carlo recently told Sporting News."Its nice to have a ride to the airport and ride back."The 20-year-old Carlo may Tony Phillips Jersey not have the years of service of most veterans, but he has no shortage of experiences to share with anyone willing to listen. He made the jump direct from the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League to the NHL last season with just seven games of pro experience the prior season with Providence of the AHL. Once he won a job in training camp, Carlo was on the Bruins top defense pair all season with Zdeno Chara and finished with 16 points (six goals, 10 a sists), a plus-16 rating and 52.0 Corsi For percentage in 82 games. He averaged 20:49 of ice time.Along the way, a Bruins team desperate for a return to the Stanley Cup playoffs fired coach Claude Julien and replaced him with Bruce Ca sidy, who led Andrew Triggs Jersey the teamon an 18-8-1 run that led to the postseason. But thats when Carlos rookie year took a disappointing turn.GRETZ: In the meaningle s regular season finale, Carlo went into the end boards awkwardly after a hit from Washingtons Alex Ovechkin. The dreaded C word concu sion ended Carlos season. Although he began skating toward the end of the Bruins six-game first-round playoff lo s to Ottawa, he was only able to experience the postseason from the pre s box.It tempted Carlo to rush back, but hed been educated about how to handle a head injury and was coached along the way by the Bruins training staff, and teammates like Patrice Bergeron, to take his time. It was hard," Carlo admitted. "Especially when youre not around the team as much, its lonely at times and when youre going through something like that, youre kind of all alone. It sucks and you just want to be back a part of the team in any way that you can. That was really hard for me, but a good learning experience as well to watch the playoffs. You see the intensity and all that, and my first experience with that."It was great that I could help the team get to that point, but this year we can hopefully get to that point and I can be a part of it.Carlo was symptom-free by the time he started his offseason workouts. Once he got to training camp he was eager to Sean Manaea Jersey take some contactto truly prove he was past the injury. He said it took a couple days of battle drills in training camp to get back to being himself.PREVIEW:Ca sidy was pleased he didnt see any tentativene s in his defensemans play from the outset at camp.I thought he was a little rusty ... could tell he hadnt played in a while, hadnt been around it," Ca sidy said. "Didnt see any lack of competitivene s in him or pulling or anything like that. It was just rust."With the rust off, Carlo usedtraining camp to secure his grip on a spot among the Bruins top-five defensemen, and by the end of camp Ca sidy included Carlo in that group during a discu sion about the makeup Yusmeiro Petit Jersey of the Bruins defense. Carlo proved adept at playing solid hockey while learning on the job last season, and itll be no different this year. Were going to continue to rely on him to defend well, be a shutdown guy, Ca sidy said. Were going to continue to ask him to improve his puck skills and all-around game in that area. And that hasnt changed with this camp. Its an area that he would acknowledge and we know that we want him to grow to be a better puck mover. So thats a daily proce s that hell go through.CERNY:This season should be calmer for Carlo. He wont have to live in a hotel until December waiting for the Bruins to tell him to get a place in town. The Bruins should have the same coach and he should be a regular in the lineup if he keeps expanding his game. His confident he wont have concu sion problems moving forward.Overall, its positioning on the ice, different things like that, that we as players know how to take hits and do things like that,"Carlo said. "I didnt put myself in the best position on that hit either. So going forward Ill just be a little bit more careful.A native of Colorado, Carlo lived in Boston over the summer and found out what its like to truly be on ones own. The cooking and cleaning are on his shoulders. Handling household chores, though, shouldnt be a problem for someone who handled so much on and off the ice last season as a NHL rookie. If any of his teammates are interested, Carlo would make a great roommate.
